How to improve your Baby's neck strength and development? (feat. Tummy Time)
If you're new to parenting, you probably have a lot of questions and concerns about how to take care well of your baby. So here with a wealth of parenting information and tips so you can raise your children well.
Starting from Days 100 after birth, newborn's bones begin to gain strength and are able to lift their heads on their own. Children's stages of neck development and head control vary, and some children may reach these goals more quickly, while others may take longer but should be within 5 to 6 months at the latest. SLOW- doesn't mean there's something wrong with your baby, you need to wait slowly and help your baby to stand on his/her own!
What if the babies start head up?
The muscles in the neck are at their weakest point when your baby is born and it's highly important to support the neck of your newborn baby every time you lift him/her. After some time you can observe the changes in your baby as they will gradually develop head control and neck strength slowly.
When your baby will learn to hold the head up, you’ll notice that the baby has started sitting up, crawling, and can roll over. Your child needs to reach development milestones in their own time and you can try this to help your baby - Tummy Time!
TUMMY TIME
Tummy time is laying babies on their stomachs for brief periods while they're awake. It's an important way to help babies strengthen their neck and shoulder muscles, and improve motor skills.
How to do Tummy Time
One of the best and simplest ways to strengthen the neck muscles of your baby is to place your baby on his/her tummy. You can start practicing this on your newborn baby by placing your baby belly down on your chest or lap for a few minutes (approximately 2-3 times per day). You can gradually increase the time until you reach 20 minutes per session and just make sure you never leave your baby unattended. If your baby gets cranky during tummy time you can prop it up by placing an extra blanket or padding to provide comfort to your little one.
What Else Should You Know?
- Always stay with your baby during tummy time.
- Always place babies on their backs (never on their bellies) to sleep to help prevent SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).
- Do tummy time on a low, safe surface. Don't put your baby on a sofa or bed, where they could roll off or suffocate on pillows or a soft surface.
If your baby doesn't seem to enjoy tummy time, add some variety. Sing songs, keep colorful toys nearby, get down on the floor and eye-to-eye with your baby, and have others join you. Don't give up! Tummy time is important, and some babies just need a little extra time to get used to it.
